On the 8th Day of Christmas...

Lorelei's Blog

On the 8th Day of Christmas I will be at my favorite bead shop, STASH for some much needed downtime beading, eating, talking, beading, eating talking, and gazing at the bead wall.  But most of all spending time with friends.
HAPPY NEW YEAR!

The Year of Jewelry Project, 2013

I joined a new group on Facebook:  The Year of Jewelry Project, 2013.  As a member, you are supposed to create a piece of jewelry a week.  As you work within the weekly timeframe, you create designs you may like, or not like.  Sometimes you will feel like making jewelry sometimes you won't.  But the goal is to see how much you have grown as a jewelry designer at the end of the year.  There are weekly themes for those of us (me) who can't concentrate and lose focus often.  The first week's theme for the New Year is RENEWAL.

Renewal:  It makes me think about the snow and how it covers everything throughout the winter.  The pic above only gives a glimpse of the snow outside our window this morning.  Then comes spring with the melting of the snow, and trees start showing buds on once bare limbs.   Cliche, I know.

I  took a burnished leaf from my Holiday Bling II swap stash and used patinas to match it closer to the fire agate beads.  I have fallen in love with faceted agates.  You can see the shimmer in the photo below.  I used copper findings, and 10mm, 12mm, and 16mm agates in pinks, light oranges, clear and opaque whites.

And here is is:  Dawn's Snow!

Thank you for stopping by my blog.  I love to hear from other bloggers, so please leave comments or just say hello.
This is definitely going to be a year of challenges.  Have I said that I love challenges?  Well I do.  Have a wonderful holiday!

Lorelei's Blog: 12 Days of Christmas Handmade Gift Swap

The Challenge, hosted by Lorelei Eurto:

Group #1 was for Components/Pendants/Beads- Participants will create by hand (no store bought beads/components please) 11 beads or components and for 11 days, then we open each component, and chronicle gifted beads on our blogs.

Group #2 was for General Gifts- Since we all love handmade gifts, Lorelei suggest participants make these gifts by hand, but they can be in any genre you like. Ornaments, Jewelry, prints, potholders, whatever you desire!  Be creative and give gifts that you would love to receive yourself.

Eleven (11) people (per group) were randomly chosen to participate and Lorelei Eurto,  is in each group.  Low and behold, my name came up for Group 1!  Now I have to make handmade beads or components for 11 people.  What was I thinking?  I love challenges?

I visited the blogs of my fellow Group 1 members, and wouldn't you know, most of them make gorgeous lamp work, ceramic, metal clay, jewelry and components.  I now feel extremely intimidated, but hope they like my extreme beginner, and somewhat juvenile handmade gifts.

I made several sets of polymer clay beads and pendants.  The pendants can also be made into  ornaments.  Why ornaments?  Does anyone out there in blog land remember Christmas Uglies?  I do.  My mom and I painted them and hung them in the windows when I was about 6 or 7 years old.  Christmas Uglies were pre-printed on interfacing and painted with Artex paints.

I don't know what I sent each participant, so it will not only be a surprise for them, but for me as well.  Remember to come back for the reveal during the 12 days of Christmas, starting December
25!

On the First Day of Christmas Lorelei sent to me:

Holiday Bling Blog Hop

Marlene Cupo and Shelley Graham Turner host a group on Facebook called MarShellSwaps.  This group is for beaders who enjoy swaps, hops, and challenges.  I missed the first Holiday Bling swap, but happily signed up for the Holiday Bling II swap and hop!  Thank you Shelley for keeping us on task.  I was partnered with Dyanne Everett-Cantrell, Dee-Liteful Jewelry Creations.  I had a lot of fun sneaking around the internet to find out what types of "bling" my partner likes.  Now here is my bling from Dyanne.  Oops! In my haste to post before the deadline, I forgot the beautiful mismatched earrings Dyanne made for me.  One is blue and one is a deep red and both have other colors swirling throught.  I wear them often, because they go with just about everything in my wardrobe.  Stop by Dyanne's blog and view the full picture of her Holiday Bling!  Thank you Dyanne for the wonderful gifts.

Memories: My Son Wants a What for Christmas?

I was catching up with a few of my favorite blogs and came across Lori Anderson's blog, Pretty Things.  Her posts can be funny, joyful, and thought provoking. Today, she posted about her son's    desire for an Elf (you know the one featured in the movie, Elf on the Shelf).  Her post made me remember when my son Victor, at 4 years old, wanted a "Barbie" for Christmas.

Yep, a "Barbie" doll.  Victor really wanted a Barbie, and asked for one constantly.  Well as you can guess, this did not bode will with DH (DaHusband).  He couldn't figure out why his tough as nails son wants a "girl toy."  He pretty much said that "we" are not getting a Barbie for our son.

One afternoon, Victor and AJ were with me in a local thrift store.  The boys went right to the toy section while I looked at getting some clothing for them.  Lo and behold, the 4 year old zeroes in on the one lonely African American Barbie left on a shelf dressed in her finest pink dress.  Victor looked at me with the biggest grin on his face as he held up his dream girl.  Of course I bought it (a bargain at $2).

Not Victor's Barbie, but close.
DH blew a gasket:  "I can't believe you bought him a Barbie!"  My wonderful son, the proud owner of a Barbie, took this doll everywhere.  Even to preschool.  This is where I learned that my son saw several little girls carrying them around and was curious as to why they were so excited about Barbies.  Can you believe it?  At the tender age of 4, my son was trying to figure girls out.

Over the course of a few days my son studied his Barbie.  By that I mean he stripped her of all of her clothing, and then proceeded to toss her abound a bit, cut the hair, and tore off the arms.  By then DH was not as upset that his son wanted a Barbie for Christmas, and my son lost interest in a toy that does nothing.

My son Victor is now 17, AJ is 15, and Leo is 12.  They still want toys that "do stuff."

Would you buy a "Barbie" for your son?

What to do with Free Beads?

Lesley Watt, The Gossiping Goddess, received a huge stash beads from a friend, Kaz Baildon, who just happened to be destashing.  After playing with the beads, Lesley decided to share the stash.  Ten lucky people will receive a bead or two or three.  If your name is chosen from the blog draw, you get free beads!  But what are good are free beads without a challenge?  The challenge is to make something from the beads you receive and post your creations.  My name was drawn and I received these lovely beads.

My favorite color combination.

I made earrings with the wavy purple lampwork discs with the green center.  I decided to string chain through the disks to make some earrings with movement.  And boy do they swing.

The green lampwork bead seemed like a focal bead to me so I decided to make a simple slip-on silver chain (say that 10 times fast) necklace.  I added some lampies from Anne Miller, and some ceramic beads from Caroline of Blueberri Beads.  I love it!

Thank you Leslie for hosting a wonderful challenge, and for your awesome offering of beads.  Thanks to Kaz for passing the beads along to you.
